This update has certainly ruffled some feathers amongst SEOs in my local area. While I doubt that you AdWords spending actually matters for organic listings, the rest of the tips are excellent in my opinion.

Great post and fully agree with Jones. What is the purpose of the internet if all we see is the boring high-street giants?

We already have the same shops on every country, city, airport, street etc.

Doing the same on the internet completely beats the purpose. The big brands can use AdWords for that. 3 positions at the top and another 6 or 7 on the side are already dominating results. Why do this for natural listings.

What Schmidt might not be saying is that their big AdWords spenders with all their crap Flash sites have started complaining about their positions and the fact that they cannot get their heads around SEO.

Before WalMart, Mom and Pop shops did just fine and made a decent living for themselves. Now we live in a society of sameness. The big brands are in every city in America and the landscape of Chilis, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King, Applebees, etc. do little to distinguish one town from another.

Is this really what we want? Starbucks already proved that their brand on every corner was too much for the public to bear.

Mom and pop shops don't necessarily want to own the market, squash the competition or become big brand corporations. They just want to make a decent living. They also provide us with the diversity of choice.

Fortunately, we still have local banks that are not failing and are not in Google's top 10 list even though they are relevant to our search.

Google is just another Walmart, serving up the same thing everyday, trying to shape and control the market. Let's hope the masses can break away from the herd.
